Laughtercise is based on Laughter Yoga which is a unique concept where anyone can laugh for no reason without relying on humour, jokes or comedy.
We initiate laughter as an exercise in a group and then using eye contact and childlike playfulness the laughter soon becomes real and contagious.
The reason we call it Laughtercise is because it combines laughter exercises with deep, yogic stretching and breathing. This brings more oxygen to the brain and body which makes one feel more energetic and healthy.
The concept of Laughtercise is based on the scientific fact that the body cannot differentiate between real and fake laughter. A person gets the same physiological and psychological effects from both.
In order to get the scientifically-proven health benefits of laughter we need to laugh continuously, with breathing breaks, for 10-15 minutes. Since in Laughtercise we perform laughter as an exercise, we can prolong the laughter as long as we want. On the other hand, natural laughter comes for just a few seconds here and there and is not enough to bring about physiological and biochemical changes in the body.
To reap the health benefits of laughter, it has to be loud and deep, originating from the diaphragm. It might not be socially acceptable to laugh loudly, but Laughtercise provides the environment in which to really laugh loudly and heartily.
Natural laughter through our lives depends upon many reasons and conditions, but there are times when we find it difficult to find a reason to laugh.
